Phoenix - Dreaming

It had been seven days since that strange afternoon in LA, but for Pat and Penny, life had almost returned to normal. The initial curiosity about their "new suits" had slowly faded as the routines of daily life in Oregon reclaimed their attention. Their small coastal cottage in Bandon was a world away from Los Angeles, nestled among towering trees with views of the endless Pacific stretching beyond. The journey home had been restful, a welcome escape from the city's pace as they wound their way through the redwoods and mountains, breathing in the familiar scent of pine and sea air.

At first, they had indulged in a little research, poking around the Internet for information on Sand Art and labyrinths. They weren’t the mystical type; to them, these arts were about as serious as horoscopes—a bit of fun, but nothing to take to heart. And yet, the experience in Sunrise Treasures lingered, faint but persistent, like the feeling of a half-remembered dream.

Back home, the familiarity of Bandon washed over them, grounding them. The weather was cooler here, especially in the evenings, and they loved it. After dinner, Pat and Penny bundled up in layers, preferring the brisk air to a warm furnace. They had always enjoyed the feeling of cool air on their faces as they slept, wrapped in blankets, cozy yet connected to the elements outside.

It was on one of these nights, with the evening spreading a blanket of stars over the Oregon coast, that they both drifted into a deep, almost instantaneous sleep. And immediately, they found themselves in the midst of one of the most vivid and wonderful dreams they had ever experienced.

They were with friends, though oddly, none of the faces were familiar. Yet, as they floated above the beach, observing the sand art below them being washed away with the gentle rhythm of the waves, they felt an undeniable sense of belonging. Pat glanced at Penny, and they shared a knowing smile—this was special, though neither of them could quite say why.

Soon, the strangers began to guide them, their gentle presence leading them higher and higher until they could see the vast curvature of the Earth below, like a majestic blue marble wrapped in swirling clouds, soon fading into delightful pastel colors rushing ever upward. The platform they found themselves on was solid, yet seemed to shimmer as though woven from starlight. They sat together, and Pat and Penny realized that among the group were the other couples from the shop—a comforting revelation that brought a sense of camaraderie. They had all experienced the same strange events, though none of them knew why or what it meant.

As they settled in, a wave of calm washed over them, a profound serenity that felt like the purest happiness of childhood. And yet, beneath this peace, there was a quiet understanding of the seriousness of their gathering, as though they were preparing for something larger than themselves.

Without words or explanations, knowledge began to unfold within them, each of them understanding the purpose of the “new suits.” They weren’t physical suits, but rather a protective force, woven into their very essence—a defense mechanism capable of shielding them from the greatest dangers. They knew, instinctively, that these suits were a gift, a profound responsibility they would bear not only for themselves but for others.

Pat exhaled slowly, feeling both gratitude and awe. Penny, her hand clasped tightly in his, whispered, “It’s like... a calling. Something we were meant to do.”

But just as they all basked in this newfound clarity, an ear-splitting scream shattered the calm. The sound was beyond horrific, an agonized wail that tore through their hearts and minds, and they all felt its source—a soul-deep terror emanating from one of their newfound friends.

In a flash, they saw Elena, one of the other couples from the shop, her face contorted in a silent struggle against a monstrous, otherworldly presence. The creature was like fire incarnate, a mass of dark red flames so intense they radiated a heat beyond anything they’d ever known, yet with a sinister darkness woven into it. The evil of the creature was palpable; it radiated from every flickering tendril, each pulse of flame searching, probing for a way into Elena’s very soul.

Horrible Dreams

The horror of the sight jolted Pat and Penny, making them want to turn away, to escape. But at that moment, a shift occurred within the group. The initial urge to flee melted into a resolute determination. They couldn’t leave Elena to face this alone. Each of them felt an intense bravery ignite, a bravery they had never experienced, as if their souls had been fortified for this very moment.

They instinctively joined forces, their wills merging, surrounding Elena with an unbreakable circle of strength. As one, they focused their energy on the creature, willing it to shrink, to extinguish. And as they united, the dark flame creature began to wither, its power waning as it was compressed smaller and smaller, until, with one final pulse, it vanished—like a candle snuffed out by a pinch of the fingers.

The tension broke, and the group collectively exhaled, hearts pounding but triumphant. They had faced something beyond understanding, and together, they had won.

In a blink, they were back in their own homes, each couple jolted awake, still clutching each other, their breaths heavy. The memory of the encounter remained vivid, imprinted in their minds with an otherworldly clarity.

Pat turned to Penny, wide-eyed. “Did you just…?”

“Yes,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Every single moment.”

They lay there in silence, absorbing the reality of what they had just shared. The shop owner’s warning now made sense; they understood the stakes, and they knew their new suits were far more than a metaphor. They were a gift—and a duty.

“We need to go back to the shop,” Pat said finally, the words barely audible. Penny nodded in agreement, though neither of them felt the need to discuss it further. They knew they weren’t alone, and they knew that, like them, the others were preparing to return.

The thought of what awaited them was daunting, but they also felt an unshakable certainty: this was only the beginning. And together, they would face whatever came next.
